From School Options to a Family Plan

A five-part plan to weigh your options, choose a school and arrange choice scholarship support where available.

  1. 1

    Know what support is available

Indiana students in K-12 have universal eligibility from 2026-27, with no income cap. Check the Indiana Department of Education’s current requirements and the school’s participation before proceeding. Have your Indiana residency documents ready and verify the latest state guidance.

  2. 2

Compare the school day, not just the name

Consider public, charter, private, homeschool and online settings against your child’s learning style and your family’s routine. For the best choice schools on your shortlist, arrange visits and ask about teaching, support and the full price. Confirm scholarship participation for any private school you consider.

  3. 3

    Start with an admissions decision

Follow the selected school’s enrollment requirements and submit its requested materials. A participating school must accept your child before a choice scholarship award can be made.

  4. 4

Let the school guide the voucher paperwork

Secure admission at a participating school before seeking a Choice Scholarship award. In most cases, that school sends the scholarship application to the Indiana Department of Education for your family. Ask which documents are needed, keep track of the school’s deadlines and return requested information promptly.

  5. 5

Confirm the costs and plan for renewal

State scholarship funds go to your participating school rather than into your family’s bank account. Ask for a written breakdown of any balance and additional expenses. Put annual scholarship renewal on your calendar and work with the school to complete it.
